Lighting the Way Ahead

with Vectorworks Spotlight

While the sun has at last put in an appearance, it is lighting from a Vectorworks perspective that has been taking centre stage for us this last couple of weeks.

Two days in Leeds at Plasa Focus for the third year running saw another busy time for us. As in previous years, we were overwhelmed by the interest in Vectorworks Spotlight from freelance lighting designers, but this year, there were three points that stood out:

  • More than ever, lighting designers were interested in the automatic link between Vectorworks Spotlight and Lightwright which has increased in capability with the combination of Vectorworks 2013 and Lightwright 5. Lightwright understands what designers and electricians do with their paperwork. The link between Vectorworks and Lightwright is bi-directional, so details can be updated through the design or via Lightwright.

  • With the new Audio tools in Vectorworks Spotlight 2013, the interest from sound designers and engineers was evident as well. New speaker and speaker array objects, originally from Landru Design, enable sound designers to create speaker layout system drawings and perform basic audio coverage analysis.

  • However, probably the most significant development was in education. Over the last year, we have personally provided Vectorworks for a number of technical theatre theatre courses. At Plasa Focus, we had a further six colleges/universities asking for proposals to implement Vectorworks in time for the September intake. So now more than ever, Vectorworks Spotlight appears to be the tool of choice for entertainment design.

If that wasn’t enough, my journey back from Leeds took in a presentation to staff and students at yet another university planning to implement Vectorworks next term.

With Kate in Oslo next week, training at the National Theatre of Norway, the ABTT Show in a few weeks and Plasa later in the Autumn, Vectorworks Spotlight will continue to be one of the fastest growing products within the Vectorworks stable.
