ecobuild—Best of Breed Solutions Welcomed

The beginning of March and ecobuild typically act as a good barometer for our business activity during the rest of the year. Based on the event last week at ExCeL arena, we are right to be hiring extra people.

Compared to last year, ecobuild had an atmosphere which appeared much more positive and full of optimistic expectation for the year ahead. Certainly, on the Vectorworks stand, the stream of visitors was far greater than last year and included professionals from a multitude of disciplines — architects, landscape architects, engineers, energy consultantsAdrian_Slatter_Presents_BIM.png and more. Therefore, it was reassuring how well the OPEN BIM message continues to be received. The presentations on the stand showcased the benefits that Vectorworks Architect and Vectorworks Landmark bring to architects, interior designers, surveyors and landscape architects, wherever they are, or plan to be, on the BIM maturity curve. In addition, talks led by integrated Integrated Environmental Solutions (IES) on energy analysis and Nemetschek SCIA on structural design really highlighted the benefits that best of breed products with OPEN BIM collaboration can bring to BIM projects. We were also fortunate to have Neil Marshall and Richard O’Hanlon from The Design Buro, recounting their own move to BIM, and the opportunities and challenges they faced and addressed along the way.

The latest NBS BIM survey suggests that 39% of firms are already working in 3D/BIM and that figure will rise to 77% in 2014. Certainly, speaking to many of the visitors to ecobuild and to firms I visit while delivering the “BIM — your next step” CPD session, the real adoption figure is much lower. However, that doesn’t mean that firms are not eager to understand the benefits that BIM methodologies can bring — far from it. There is a thirst for knowledge and a clear understanding that BIM is the way forward. However, that’s combined with a desire to adopt BIM in a measured, cost-effective and non-prescriptive way. Fortunately, Vectorworks offers many a solution that fits this aspiration exactly.

One of the key areas discussed at ecobuild was the value of information. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the show, we are holding a free webinar on Monday 10th March at 1:15 to look at how to make the most of the information available to you in your Vectorworks model. We will also be looking at the whole 2D/3D/information design process that Vectorworks affords in webinars later in the month.

So, yes we are right to be hiring and I suspect that this will not be the last recruitment of 2014.

By the way, you can now follow me personally on Twitter for all things BIM @MovetoBIM. Meanwhile, let’s all enjoy the sunshine—dare we believe that Spring is on the way?
